Ziegler Collection
Ziegler rugs, also known as Chobi or Ziegler-Chobi rugs, are a luxurious and refined style of hand-knotted carpet that originated in the late 19th century through a collaboration between Western designers and Persian weavers. The name "Ziegler" comes from a Swiss company, Ziegler & Co., which established workshops in Persia (modern-day Iran) to create rugs tailored to European and American tastes. Unlike traditional Persian rugs that featured intricate, tightly packed floral patterns, Ziegler rugs introduced more spacious, elegant designs with softer, more muted colour palettes—often in ivory, beige, soft blues, and faded reds. These rugs are typically made with high-quality wool and dyed using natural substances, giving them a subtle, aged appearance that enhances their charm and makes them highly versatile for modern interiors. Today, many Ziegler rugs are produced in Afghanistan and Pakistan using the same principles of quality and aesthetic refinement.

Their Origin:
Ziegler rugs originated in the late 19th century as part of a unique cross-cultural collaboration between Western design sensibilities and traditional Persian craftsmanship. The style was introduced by Ziegler & Co., a British-Swiss company that established manufacturing bases in Sultanabad (now Arak), Persia, around 1883. Their goal was to produce high-quality hand-knotted rugs tailored specifically to meet the tastes of European and American markets, which at the time were shifting toward more spacious, decorative patterns and softer, neutral colour palettes. Unlike traditional Persian rugs that often featured highly intricate and compact motifs, Ziegler rugs embraced a more open design layout with faded, aged tones—creating an antique aesthetic even in new pieces. These rugs were typically woven using fine wool and natural dyes, combining durability with elegance. The Ziegler style quickly gained popularity for its ability to blend seamlessly into Western interiors while maintaining the integrity of traditional Persian weaving techniques. Today, Ziegler rugs are primarily made in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where skilled artisans continue the legacy using similar methods, ensuring that the artistry and timeless appeal of the original Ziegler designs live on.
