Turkmen Collection
Turkmen rugs are deeply rooted in the rich cultural traditions of the Turkmen people, a nomadic and semi-nomadic ethnic group originating from Central Asia, particularly present-day Turkmenistan, northern Iran, and Afghanistan. These rugs are entirely handmade and are best known for their bold, geometric designs, most notably the iconic “gul” motif—a tribal emblem repeated throughout the rug. Traditionally woven by women on horizontal ground looms using hand-spun wool and natural dyes, Turkmen rugs carry a deep sense of cultural identity and ancestral symbolism. The colour palette typically features deep reds, rusts, and maroons, accented by blacks, ivory, and sometimes navy or green.

Their Origin:
Turkmen rugs originate from the Turkmen tribes of Central Asia, whose weaving traditions date back centuries and are considered among the oldest in the world. These nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes used rug weaving not just as an art form but as an essential aspect of daily life—creating floor coverings, wall hangings, and ceremonial pieces from locally sourced wool. The defining feature of Turkmen rugs is the use of the “gul” motif—a stylized, repeating geometric medallion that varies in design among different tribes such as the Tekke, Yomut, Ersari, and Salor. Each rug tells a story of tribal lineage, geography, and cultural symbolism. Traditionally dyed using natural substances like madder root and pomegranate skins, the deep red hues have become a signature of Turkmen weaving. Over time, these rugs became highly valued along major trade routes and eventually gained international recognition for their craftsmanship, durability, and symbolic design. Today, authentic Turkmen rugs continue to be handwoven by artisans across Turkmenistan and parts of Afghanistan, preserving the heritage of an ancient art form that still resonates with collectors and decorators worldwide.
